The club was formed as Newton Heath LYR F.C in 1878, it was a team made up of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath.
The team had always used Old Trafford as their ground but it was bombed during the second worked war and they had to seek charity from Manchester City to play their games there.
After the tragedy of the Munich plane crash killing eight players and fifteen others, the team regrouped and they went on to win the FA cup in 1963, the league in 1965 and 1967 and the European cup in 1968, and this team contained three European footballers of the year – Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best.

Manchester United have reached the semi-finals in the Champions League last season, where they played Milan, but it was the Italian side who came out on top after this match, unfortunately!

Manchester United have a reputation for playing free flowing attacking football no matter what.  A virtue that was handed down by the godfather of the club Sir Matt Busby.  The attacking style is still very present today!
