The Women's Tennis Association looks after the interests of women's professional tennis players and organizes the major women's tennis events.

In 2005 the Association changed its name into The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

The Women's Tennis Association was founded in Houston, Texas on the final day of the inaugural event, 23 September 1970.
Billie Jean King was a major figure in the early days of the WTA.

The organisation releases a weekly ranking of the players performance in the tour ( 17 tournaments within one year) Players' ranking points are calculated on how they preform on individual rounds of a tournament.

Over the history of the organisation the lady who has most titles is Martina Navratilova with 167 titles and Chris Evert is second on the list with 154 titles.

The WTA Tour Championship is a competition held at the end of every season. It is a competition between all the top ranked ladies players and the event is sponsored by Sony Ericsson. The first event of this kind was held in 1972 at Boca Raton in Florida.
