Although not as prestigious as the Champions League the UEFA Cup has and always is a fiercely competitive competition.  Sometimes the aggression for not making the Champions League will lead teams onto great things in the UEFA Cup.  This year for instance, Bayern Munich - a team with a great Champions League pedigree - are in the UEFA Cup and you can be gaurenteed they'll be doing everything in their power to take home the historic trophy. 

Best performing clubs include:

• Juventus winning three finals and coming runner-up also on three occasions
• FC Barcelona have won on three occasions and runner-up on one, as has, FC Internazionale, Valencia CF.
• Liverpool are the best preforming British team winning the competition three times (1973, 1976 and 2001)
• Spain are the best preforming nation within the competition, with Italy and England falling in at joint third position!
  
• There are 80 teams eligible to enter the first round in this competition.
  

This competition was set up in 1971, taking over from the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
It has changed its format many times over the course of its history, for example, in the 1997/98 season the final changed from a two leg match to a single match event!

In 1999 the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was abolished to allow this competition and the UEFA Cup to merge!

The single best preforming team within this competition is Juventus winning three finals and coming runner-up also on three occasions.
They won in 1977, 1990, 1993 and they were runners-up in 1965, 1971, 1995.

With regards country performances Spain has the most winning performances, winning 11 times and runner-up on 7 occasions. Italy and England is joint next with 10 wins and 8 second places.
