The PGA tour's history - from 1916 to the present

The Professional Golfer’s Association was first established in 1916 to promote and encourage golf and to host events for aspiring professional golfers.

  • Bob Harlow was named president of the association in 1930
  • After World Ward II the tournaments became more structured, and grew in popularity with the increase in interest due to television and the involvement of President Eisenhower in the sport
  • The “Tournement Players Divison” separated from the PGA in 1968
  • PGA TOUR values went from $3.9 million in 1974 to $229 million in 1993
  • Finchem became the Tour’s Commissioner in 1993, and implemented a few restructuring measures that were to have a lasting effect on the competition we know today - most importantly, he decided to strengthen it’s international standing
