The Open Championship (British Open) is the oldest of the four major golf championships and is hosted annually by one of several prestigious golf clubs in the United Kingdom, it is the largest golfing tournament within the UK, and hosts all top golfers from around the world to compete for the British title.
It is always played on a links course. In 2006 the prize fund was £4 million, making it the largest of the four majors.
The Open is played on the weekend of the third Friday in July, following The Masters and the U.S. Open and preceding the PGA Championship, and has been an official event on the PGA Tour since 1995. All editions before that date have been classified as PGA Tour wins.
