Rafael Nadal is a relatively young player in the field, having been born in Mallorca, Spain in 1986. He decided when he was 12 to pursue a career in professional tennis, and when he was just 14 played a match against Pat Cash, which he won much to the latter's suprise.
Since this early start, Nadal has continued to prove his talent via number of high-profile wins. Including an amazing 9 ATP Masters Series single titles.
Having unfortunately lost out to the title of #1 worldwide to Roger Federer in the Hamburg Open finals, since 2007 he has held the title of #2.
