McLaren, founded in 1963, is based in Woking, England. It is best known as a Formula One constructor, but has also competed in other races.
Although Ferrari holds the most records in all time Formula 1, when the period of competition is taken into account McLaren is the most successful team, having won eleven drivers' championships and eight constructors' championships since 1966 (when the team made its Grand Prix début at that year's Monaco race).
Although McLaren dominated much of the early years of Formula one racing it did enter a period of decline in the mid 1990's. It was in this period McLaren switched to Ford powered engines which was disastrous for the team, they later witched to a Peugeot powered engine, which was again dropped after one year in favour of the extremely powerful Mercedes-Benz engine, but 1995 was even worse than 1994 for the team.
1996 also so the end of their long term sponsor, Marlboro and their team colours, the black and white of Marlboro was replaced with a silver Mercedes.
The McLaren team began to rise up the championship tables once again with drivers Hakkinen and Coulthard, with championships being tightly contested in early 2000.
This year, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso both secured first places in 5 Grand Prix races, representing McLaren-Mercedes. Find out more on the Formula One Grand Prix 2007 results here!
