The Italy National Rugby Union Team represents Italy in international competitions and are now considered one of the better rugby nations in Europe.

The team annually play in the Six Nations Championship (they have been participating since the year 2000) and have competed in all the World Cup editions.

Today the sport is enjoying more media coverage than ever before in Italy: it is especially popular in Rome, L'Aquila, Treviso, Milan, Genoa, Parma and Bologna.

The coach of the Italy team at present is Nick Mallet and the captain is Marco Bortolami.

Italy played their first international game to Spain and were defeated 9-0 in 1929.
However their largest win was against the Czech Republic in 1994 which was by almost 100 points, showing the drastic improvement the team has made over the years.

There supporters have given the team the nickname of “Azzurri, the Gladiators of Rome”.
