The oldest course in the world is The Old Links at Mussleburgh, where golf has been played since 1672. The major championship are The Masters, the U.S. Open, The Open Championship (or British Open) and the PGA Championship.

Golf is a growing sport with many followers of the professional game, but many many more armature golfers taking to the green. It is estimated that there are over 32000 courses throughout the world with approximately half of these in the United States.

The professional version of the sport was initially dominated by British golfers prior to the war, but since this many more professionals have emerged from America and other commonwealth countries as well as throughout the rest of the world.

There are at least 20 professional golf tours, which are run and regulated by the PGA, they organise the events and arrange sponsorship for each event.
The biggest and most popular tour is the PGA tour, which attracts all of the major golfers from around the world, with a prise of $800 000. With the European tour coming second in worldwide prestige.
