The United States Open Championship is annually played in the United States and is organised by the United States Golf Association every June: the final round is always played on the 3rd Sunday of the month. The first US Open Championship was played on October 4, 1895.
It is one of the four major championships in men's golf and is contested at a variety of courses.
An Open course has special features: for example, it is longer than normal and will have hilly greens. The courses that are attempting to get on the rotation for the Open will normally be rebuilt in order to meet these requirements.
This tournament has been greatly dominated by US success however three consecutive non American winners have claimed the tile in the past three years, these were Geoff Ogilvy, an Australian won in 2006, Michael Campbell from New Zealand won in 2005 and Retief Goosen from South Africa won in 2004. No European player has won since 1970.
In 2006 the total prise money for the US Open was $6800000 and winners share £1225, 000.
