The France National Rugby Union Team represent France in international competitions and are governed by the Fédération Française de Rugby, founded in 1919.
France annually participate in the Six Nations Championship annually. The team have won the competition fourteen times, shared eight wins and achieved eight Grand Slams.
France has also competed in every World Cup and were finalists in 1987 and 1999. They made it to the semifinals in 2003.
The current coach is Marc Lievremont and the captain is Raphael Ibanez.
Their team colours are Blue and white with red socks, although they have a second kit which is largely white with blue strips and white socks.
They played their first international game on 1st January 1906 with New Zealand loosing 38 -8.
After the first game won by France, against Scotland in 1911, the captain who was Marcel Communeau asked the team to adopt the Coq – rooster as its symbol, this animal was probably chosen because it is considered to be a strong combative animal, that can be aggressive.
The emblem had been used previous to the Scotland game, by a former French soccer player, Jean Rigal.
The badge which was originally white and red, was embroidered and multicoloured after 1945, and then later golden since 1970.
