The Federation Cup is one of the few international team tennis championships for women, and is held annually worldwide. In 1995, the competition became simply known as Fed Cup. The idea behind this premier championship occured in 1963 when it was first originally established as part of celebrations feting the 50^th anniversary of it's brother competition, the Davis Cup.

Since then, the Fed Cup has thrived and draws thousands of spectators across the world. In 2006, the Italians won the cup away from home team Belgium, and the year prior to that Russia beat France – a sense of déja vu, as the exact same match occurred in 2004: with the same result.

This year, a number of fantastic players will be joining forces to attempt to steal away the cup from defending champions, Italy. Britain has of yet never won the Fed Cup – but there's a first time for everything, so why not come along next year and support the Great Britain team in person! The line-up for play-offs and the semi-finals were thrilling, and the results are in - Russia beat the US 3 – 2, whilst Italy slammed France with a similar score. The final of the Fed Cup 2007 is due to take place between Russia and defending champions Italy on the 15^th - 16^th September.

The ITF, sponsors and organizers of both the Davis and Fed Cup, have agreed and confirmed the following schedule for next year's 2008 Fed Cup event.

• The first round will occur the week commencing the 28^th of January

• Semifinal and play-off round on the week of the 21^st of April

• Ultimately the final on the week of the 8^th of September
