Later this month, some of the world's most prestigious tennis teams will compete for the title of world's best. Hundreds of individuals have been slogging it out over the past few months in an attempt to win the Davis Cup, but it is later this month that things will begin to get competitive.
The Davis Cup is organized and managed by the International Tennis Federation, and is currently the world's largest international team sporting event. First established between the U.S. and the U.K., this premier championship is open to all teams worldwide. Last year, Russia took the cup, beating Argentina into second place on home ground. 2005 saw the Croatian team overcome Slovakia, and the year before Spain won.
This year's Davis Cup play-offs will see a series of matches occur between the 20th and 23rd of September (first team of pair represents home team):
- Israel v Chile
- Serbia v Australia
- Austria v Brazil
- Peru v Belarus
- Great Britain v Croatia
- Czech Republic v Switzerland
- Japan v Romania
- Slovak Republic v Korea, Rep.
