The Australian Open is the first of the world's four Grand Slam tennis tournaments and is held in January at Melbourne Park. The tournament was held for the first time in 1905.

Like the other three Grand Slam events, it was played by top-ranked amateur players and known as the Australian championships until 1968.

Originally based at the grass courts at Kooyong in the city of Melbourne, within the inner south-east, the tournament was moved to Melbourne Park in 1988.

It was built to meet the growing demand for the sport within Australia and the amount of fans who were willing to travel to Australia to be part of the tournament.

Mats Wilander was the only player to win the tournament both on grass and on Rebound Ace.
The current men's title is held by Rodger Federer, he has won this competition in 2004, 2006 and 2007, while the women's title is held by Serena Williams, she has won this competition in 2003, 2005 and 2007.

There is also a number of doubles matches played at the Australian open, these include, the men's doubles, Woman's doubles as well as mixed doubles, these titles are held by, Bob Bryan and Mile Bryan who have won the last two consecutive years, Cara Black and Liezel Huber, 1st time winners, and the mixed doubles holders are Elena Likhovtseva and Daniel Nestor
