Aston Villa Football Club, founded in 1874, won their first FA Cup in 1887, two years after English football had become professional. They are one of the four English teams who have won the European Cup.
However they were not always a highly successful team, in the 60's they declined, as they had not the players or finance to compete with growing teams throughout the UK, but after spending money on new players, but with debt mounting and fans boycotting Villa's home games because of the board of directors, trouble came to a head in November 1968, the board sacked the manager Cummings and within weeks the entire board had resigned due to pressure from the fans.
The club colours are claret, sky blue and white. They were the first to wear them, although other teams have adopted the same colours since then.
It was after this that Aston Villa began to rise, with Pat Matthews buying the club, within two years Aston Villa was in a club final, but unfortunately lost.
Aston Villa are also one of the seven teams that have played every Premiership season.
Today Aston Villa still retain an excellent performance and is under the ownership now of Randy Lerner, who has in recent times loosened his purse strings and spend substantial money on new signings, with promises of more to come!
